Omnitrix Challenge Review

Welcome once more to my third toy review of the night! This time, I'll be reviewing the cheaper of the two OV Omnitrixes released so far: the Omnitrix Challenge. The Challenge is a game where two people launch alien figures and see who has the best stats. Is the toy any good? How about the ten included minifigures? Read on.

The Omnitrix

The Challenge is a version of the new Omniverse Omnitrix. It looks remarkably like the real thing, only in silver. Ah well. It's still pretty. The OV Omnitrix, IMO, is the best looking Omnitrix of them all, and this toy looks good as well. It is rather thick, however...

From the front. The strap fastens with small hooks on the other side. There are three hooks and four holes.

The top. Man that cover looks awesome.

The little wheel here is what allows you to rotate the chamber inside and select your figure.

And the grey stubby thing is the launch button. You press down on it and two things happen: The cover flips open in a very show-inaccurate manner, and one of your aliens flies out. The aliens come with the four inch line. But what if you don't have any? Don't worry, ten are included.

The Omnitrix opened. LOOK IT'S MAH HAND.

The inside. The lack of an hourglass is disappointing, but I don't really see how they could have worked one in. The three chambers each hold one minifigure, so you can have three inside at any given time.

MOAR HAND. It's a very chunky Omnitrix. The chambers require it to be very...large. It's not uncomfortable, though. The bottom is curved to accommodate wrists.

The Figures

The Omnitrix comes with ten minifigures to get you started. In my 4-inch review, I mentioned that there is a difference between the ones sold with the figures and the ones that come with this, and I might as well say it here. The ones sold separately are a hard plastic, while these are softer and more rubbery. Generally, this causes no issues, but I did have one problem that I'll discus when I get to that specific figure.

Heatblast

Returning readers will know that I just adore how much detail is crammed onto the tiny figures, and that stays true here. Heatblast is based on an older design, but it doesn't matter, as he looks basically the same in every show.

XLR8

XLR8 is my favorite OS alien and he looks as perfect as ever on his minifigure. It's based on his OS design, but his design has always stayed the same, so it's not really noticeable.

Cannonbolt

And here we have our problem child. Cannonbolt's base was bent in the package, and as you can see above, the right-hand corner is upturned. This poses a few problems: he has trouble standing up, and he launches whackily. Other than that, the figure is as good as ever. It's also the first one based on an OV design.

Upchuck

And here we are, right back to old designs. This here is UAF Upchuck not OV teen. I would say that this is an indicator that he'll look pretty much the same when he eventually shows up, but as we'll see in a bit, it really isn't.

Spidermonkey

We already saw him in the Wave 2 review, but I'll go ahead and show him alone. Not much to see here; he's as good as the others. Oh, and he has his OV design. Moving on.

Lodestar

The black ones are hard to photograph, but he came out better than Eatle, thank goodness. Lodestar has his apparently rarely-seen OV design here.

Water Hazard

Remember what I was saying about old design reuse not indicating a minor redesign? Yeah. Here's the example. Water Hazard's minifigure is his UAF design, but he received a fairly substantial redesign. So all bets are off for Upchuck. As for the figure itself, it's a very nice rendition of old Water Hazard.

Armodrillo

One of the more interesting strength aliens, Armodrillo is seen here in his old design. Yeah. He really just casts more doubt on the future of Upchuck. His pose is kinda weird, but really, most of them are.

Terraspin

And of course they skip my favorite Andromeda alien for this -_-. Whatever. Viv's coming. They decided to use the new Terraspin, but not the new Water Hazard or Armodrillo, which is really surprising. Terraspin barely changed. Whatever. Another good figure, even though he's rather small.

NRG

A suited NRG to complement the upcoming escaping NRG figure. This one's good as usual, and based on his new design :D

The Game

And now for the fun part. What do you do with this silly little watch? Answer: launch these guys. They don't go very far, but if you're easily amused like me, this will keep you entertained for hours, even without a partner.

Step one: Get the Omnitrix and three figures. I have selecte XLR8, Upchuck, and NRG.

Step two: load 'em up.

Step three: press the button

VOOM! Hours of fun!

Store-bought figs work too! Pictured: Four Arms, Spidermonkey, and Shocksquatch.

And now for something completely different - for me, anyway:

So how is this? AWESOME! My final rating?

Rating: 4.8/5 Very Good

I can't recommend this over the Touch, as I don't have the touch. However, I wholeheartedly recommend this if you're looking for an Omnitrix and are easily amused. I promise you won't regret it.
